Six questions for … Rathna Ramanathan

Rathna Ramanathan is a practising designer and tutor from Chennai, India now based in London. Rathna is the Head of Design & Interaction on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course at Central St Martins, London and has her own design studio minus9 Design.

Which work are you particularly proud of? Which work best represents your style or approach?

The work I have done for BBC World in rural India and my more esoteric typographic books for Tara Press, India. But I don’t have a style. I would hope that any work I do represents my approach which I would say is to be relevant to my client (not the one paying me but the one for whom my work/communication is finally intended).

What inspires you?
People: their habits, passion, behaviour
India: its intensity and love for life, colour and food

Which character/letter would you take to a deserted island?
The Tamil character ஃ or ‘āytam’ which is neither a vowel nor a consonant.

TYPO Berlin 2011: What are you especially looking forward to?
My German visa which will allow me to attend the conference.

Your favorite TYPO-moment?
Choosing a German moment in my memory: When I was doing my MA in London and discovered that the college font library had this beautiful (and relatively new) typeface called ‘Meta’. I used it for all my final year work.

Required reading: What are currently your favorite interesting/beautiful publications, books and interesting links?
Carl Faulmann – Das Buch der Schrift. Enthaltend die Schriftzeichen und Alphabete aller Zeiten und aller Völker des Erdkreises (1880)
Singanapalli Balaram – Thinking Design
Modern Typography in Britain: graphic design, politics, and society (Typography papers 8)
